Laws for getting paid at work?
Find answers to your legal question.

Laws for getting paid at work?

if I get sent home after 1 hour work do I get paid for 4 hours? I am full time hourly. I could have sworn I heard this as a law at one point.
Additional Details
I work Mon - Fri 8 hrs a day. I've been scheduled for one hour on Saturday for a meeting. I've never been scheduled to work one hour in a Saturday.

The answer depends on where you work, if you are working under a contract that speaks to this, if you are work-at-will, or part of a union.

If you are in the US, then each state has it's own laws that govern this. You can do research at www.usa.gov and search for "wage laws" and the state you live in.

a few (very few) states have "reporting time pay"
reporting time pay has to do with working less then the scheduled amount of time. if you are scheduled to work one hour on a Saturday and work that hour you would be owed nothing more.

the information about California is totally incorrect
in California reporting time pay applies only to shifts of 4 hours or more and the law mandates the employee be paid one half of the scheduled shift with a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 4 hours. employees who are sent home early due to performance issues or tardiness do not qualify for reporting time pay. there are numerous other exceptions and exemptions based on conditions that are not under the control of the employer such as utility outages and weather.
http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/FAQ_ReportingTimePay.htm

without knowing where you are there is no way to know if any law applies to your situation but probably not since you are concerned about the one hour on Saturday. as far as the legality of you being required to attend the meeting on what is normally a day off..........
that is 100% legal in every state

this all assumes you do not have contract that covers this issue specifically.

so..........................
EDIT the question to include location(state) and if you have any type of agreement that covers this issue.

As an "hourly" paid employee you are only due pay for time worked. Some Companies by policy have a "Report Pay Policy" but there is no federal law.

Actually you are correct, but depends on what state you reside in. In the state of California if an employee goes into work and told to leave earlier the employer must pay for the rest of the work day. This also applies if the employee showed up for work and the employer advises them to go home. They must be paid. Per my readings though I am only aware of California who has this law in effect.
