Lawyer. PLEASE help?

I'm pretty sure i want to be a lawyer when I grow up, but I'm not positive. Can someone give me an EXTREMELY in depth description of a lawyers job? And how much school you need, all that stuff.

There are many kinds of lawyers, with different specializations, different types of clients, and different typical days. I'm sure that there are websites that will provide you some examples of the descriptions that you seek.

After high school, you go to college for 4 years to get a bachelors degree. During your senior year in college, you apply to various law schools. Then you go to Law School for three years and they give you a LLB or JD degree. Then you take a bar exam in the state you want to practice in, you pass it, you join a law firm, and off you go. You're a lawyer.

First of all hottotrot is right as far as he's gone. I am a lawyer, 3 years in practice after 5 years as a computer programmer. I had no direct exposure to lawyers, none in the family, and had never needed a lawyer for anything past a traffic ticket. Now I am one and I'm struggling to do work that I both enjoy and get paid to do...

Get a summer job as a clerk / runner in a law office or volunteer for an agency that uses lawyers... try CASA or another social work agency. You need to have a passion that involves the law before you decide being a lawyer is the answer. Get involved and find a problem that only a lawyer can solve... then you will have the passion you need for 4 years of undergrad and 3 years of law school and a nice 3 day test called the bar exam.

Broad types of lawyer: criminal defense or prosecutor, government or administrative law (environmental, military, civil rights), civil plaintif attorney - like julia roberts in Erin Brockovich, civil defense (the bad guys in the same movie), family law/ divorce, agency for sports or intertainment, trusts estates, wills, intellectual property...

i'll say it like this, look up lawyer, what type you want to be, as there are several different areas of the law you could practice, and do some research because thats one of the biggest things lawyers do, they research. They study the facts in the case, go back to past cases and find the best way to go about the case. Its too broad of a subject to narrow down unless you know specifically what area you want to get into..
