If you're able to get one of those rare jobs that pays $160,000 for first year associates, you would probably be required to 2500 hours minimum (which comes out to $64/hr.) However, just because one bills 2500 hours in a year doesn't mean that they only worked 2500 hours. There are usually 200-300 hours per year that are non-billable....
If you did criminal defense and worked for a public agency, you can expect $30/hr ($60,000/year) to start with. |

Whatever the individual agrees to accept. And it would be unusual for them to be paid hourly, would normally be salaried. |

In the government sector, which is where the majority of criminal litigation is, you are looking at anywhere between $45k and $60k depending on the county you work for. If you get a private law firm position, it goes up from there but so does your hours.
I know that in San Diego county, the District Attorney's office is trying to work out a deal with the state to have a law school debt forgiveness program to wipe out all your tuition debt. That added on to your salary would be really nice.
If you are in law school right now, then you should go to the BYU Law school's job bank data base. For some reason BYU is the school that has compiled the most extensive listings but you need to get the password from your school's career services. Here is the link for after you have your password:
