Legal/Medical secretary Wage!!!??
Find answers to your legal question.

Legal/Medical secretary Wage!!!??

I live in Northern IN and am in school right now for office administration.. the only problem is I can't decide if I want to be a legal secretary or a medical secretary. Which would make more and have better job security? And also, which job would be in more demand???

Which is more interesting to you? Legal secretaries can become paralegals and earn better wages. But IMHO the jobs can be deadly dull. Medical secretaries don't have a lot of upward mobility (some go into hospital administration, but for the most part it's dead end). But it can be a lot more interesting job. If you're good you will have job security in either profession.

Edit: Medical secretaries obviously can have upward mobility into nursing, or technician jobs - but these require lots more training, and if you're going in that direction, might as well get the training first, and not bother with being a medical secretary.

Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! This is NOT a good field to invest in right now!!! Reasons: There are simply TOO MANY attorneys right now, very bad economy, today many people (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools today churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates (and this includes legal support professionals such as Legal Secretaries) for the economy.

Even if you do make it through school, you probably won't be able to find a job in the field of Law.

Even if you do find a job in the field of Law, you will discover: very political and competitive, employers typically do not care about their employees' best interests - only about how to make more money, you will be worked to death.

Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare!!! <<< LOTS of jobs there!!! The field of Healthcare is HOT right now!!! Even with your educational background.

Good luck.

You will have more leverage as a legal secretary should you wish to move on to business or law. As for demand, I would say legal - with the caveat that lawyers are generally harder to work with and the job is more demanding.

There is no such thing as job security. The sooner you accept that the better. Better to start your own financial planning, considering things like, medical coverage, home ownership, etc.

The last thing you must consider - will your credentials travel from state to state and indeed, out of the country?
