I'm the company secretary for a small business with one serving director. The director has incurred debt with a company which he is refusing to acknowledge, the selling company has instructed debt collectors to act on their behalf. They have today turned up at my own house, with wrong information saying that I am a director of the company therefore am liable for the debts. I told them this was utter nonsense, I am named on the companies house paperwork as company secretary only, I have never been a director, therefore they had no right to turn up at my house and harass me in this manner. Can someone tell me my rights?

It sounds like you need to contact an attorney AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Don't ask for legal advice over the Internet.
Call your local (usually county) bar association. Ask for names of attorneys that handle employment law for employEES.
When you call the law office(s), ask to speak to the lawyer. Do NOT tell all the little details to the Secretary - save the details for the Attorney.
When you get the Lawyer on the phone line, ask #1 first thing:
- Do they have an initial, free, first appointment?
- How much do they charge?
- Do they take payments?
- Can they help you? OR Refer you to someone who can help you?
Start looking for another job - QUIETLY.
Also: According to the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you can ask these debt collectors to "cease and desist". You should probably also put this in writing and hand it to them the next time they knock on your door - keep the letter SIMPLE. Keep photocopies of this letter. Also, start a "journal" or "diary" of these events.
