I am applying for a job and on the application it asks if you are a member of a church, the church and pastor's name/phone number, and also ask you to provide a statement on your christian beliefs. Is it legal for them to ask about your religion (my understanding is that it is not) and is it ok for me not to go into detail about my christian beliefs. Although I am a christian, i do not see the importance of discussing that with a potential employer.Thanks in advance.

It depends on what you are applying for. I believe normally it is not legal. Most jobs should only be asking you questions that has to do with the job. I mean if you are applying for a church position maybe they just want to know what others you've belonged to, it should not be held against you. However if you are applying to be like a doctor or working retail there is no need for it. Either way yur beliefs shuld never come into question no matter what the job is and neither should asking if you have kids, being married or anything unrelated to your work skill. All are illegal. |

I think it is legal to ask, but not legal to not hire you because of it. I would think it would be no different to ask for personal references. |

It could be a legal BFOQ if for example you are applying for a job with a church that requires as a BFOQ that you be a member of that faith. Other than that, it should have no bearing. |
