I have been receiving food stamps from Soc. sec. admin. since December 2nd. They told me to tell them once I have a new job but I didn't because alot of family and friends advised me not to since I would not be getting paid until around January 3rd and I had bills coming in. Tehy give me a "NJ families first" card that has cash loaded into it on the 1st of every month and food stamps the 4th of every month. I really need the money that was loaded into it on New Years Day($100) but i don't want to face the penalties if i take it for my bills. I got my new job Dec. 4th and I still need the money until I get caught up. any advice? Is it safe to take the money and food stamps since I didn't get paid until yesterday?

if you dont notify them of a new job, they can require you to repay any money paid to you by the state since the date of hire at your new job. You can also be removed from the programs and be prevented from receiving future assistance for fraud.

Depending on the situation, it is also possible for them to press criminal charges against you.

I wouldn't worry about this month bc u just got a check stub but make sure u report it. They will make u pay it back, and disqualify you.

THey will find out eventually, since your social security number is used for tax purposes, it will have record of your salary, and then you will have to pay it back, possibly with fines. So it's not safe, and it's not ethical, to continue to receive the benefit.
