Legal question regarding employment?

Can your boss legally ask why you need time off? This is when your submit a request for vacation and you have the time.

No, they may not ask why you want to use your vacation time.
This is highly illegal. However, depending upon the employment terms - which should have been indicated somewhere in writing - employers may be able to deny you take a submitted request - at that particular time- if staffing needs are too great to allow it. However, at some point during the year, it must be given to you.

In the case where two employees request the same time off,
and staffing needs are critical, it is generally given to the person with more seniority with the company, not who has a 'more pressing need'. Once again - they can not ask why you want vacation (as this is YOUR BENEFIT, and not a request for a 'leave of absence') they can only grant or defer to a later date.

Absolutely not! This inquiry can only be made in the event you are leaving under FMLA and even then you do not have to disclose to the whole planet the reason.

no they don't need to know as long as you have time off and there is no one else asking and even then it goes to the person who asked first not the person with the best reason

If your boss asked you that question I don't think he/she was nosing into your business. I don't think they want to know where you are going or anything.

Apparently they may be left short handed. Best thing to do prior to making vacation plans is to get a verbal ok for the dates you select to see if there are any scheduling conflicts especially if it's a small office. If it's verbally ok then get the boss' approval in writing. That way if something comes of it down the road you can prove the boss gave written permission.

There is nothing illegal about asking why you need time off.
