Legal ramifications of reading someone else's email?

A co-worker read my personal email and reported something I said to a friend about my boss to him. I didn't log off every time left my desk and he went into my email without my knowledge. To me this is equal to opening someone's mail - a federal offense....Am I correct?

company computers/phones are not private, there is no guarantee of privacy in the workplace when it comes to employees and communication all emails, phone calls and correspondence are company property.

No, not a federal offense.

When at work checking your personal email can be considered theft of corporate assets.

So if this person has the permission from the company to be a narc, he is fine, you are the one in trouble.

Does your company have a policy concerning Internet usage? Were you within corp policy when you logged into your personal account?

The government has nothing to do with this and wouldn't even start to get involved, the company however, has every right to know how you use their assets on their dime.

Any E-Mail or anything you do on a company computer does not officially belong to you. It belongs to the Company, so if anyone is subject to discipline it is you, for using Company's assets for personal use.

No.

First, opening U.S. mail is different than FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc., because the U.S. mail is part of the government.

Second, companies are allowed to read anything on their computers. If this was your personal e-mail account and your own computer and your own Internet connection, then you are entitled to keep it private, but if you use their equipment, then they can read it.

E-mail at work does not belong to you. It belongs to the company.

You are incorrect.

Nope.
First, regular mail through the USPS has sensitive materials, including medical records, billing information, and such. Secondly, you let your work computer unattended, logged in, for any co-worker to see. It would be the equivalency of taping your credit car bill in a common work area, and getting peeved if a co-worket glanced at it.
You have no one to blame.
