Legal to give phone number to coworker?

Is it legal for a manager to give a coworker my phone number? It is ethical?
I'm sure it probably is, but it's really frustrating to see this happen. I just wonder if there's a better way for things to be handled rather than give out personal information. Any feedback would be great! :)

1. have you made it known to the employer that your phone number was not to be given out?
2. is the phone number unlisted?
if you answer NO to both questions then the employer did absolutely nothing wrong. if you answer YES to both questions then complain.
as far as legalities there is not an issue. |

Ask why the manager did this.
If it is in case of emergency, it's probably OK.
If it is so the other person can call you for a date, it's probably wrong. |

No, privacy laws such as they are, make it so a boss can not give your phone number to a coworker unless they have permission from you..probably in writing to protect themselves from any legal trouble. |

It's not illegal. Phone numbers are not personal information. Name, date of birth, and Social Security numbers are personal information. Phone numbers are a matter of public record, as is your address.
Not a good idea for him to give out your phone number, but it's not illegal. |

If your co-worker would normally have access to your phone number while at work, then there would be no problem. The fact that you are upset by your manager's action tells me that your phone number is not accessible to other staff. In that case, your personal information is covered by privacy laws. He/she should have asked the co-worker if it was alright to give you his number and then contacted you and asked you to call your co-worker.
If you want, you could discuss the situation with HR, but normally they would want you to approach your manager first to resolve it.

I have always told the person calling to give me their number and I would have the person whose number they wanted call them back. Thereby protecting that person. |
