Legally, where do I stand with my job as a Care Assistant?

I started a job on friday as a night care assistant. I am contracted to 3x10hr shifts.
On my first night at the home I was counted in the numbers, there was me and one other carer for 30 residents. I didn't get a break and had to get 15 residents up between 5:30am and 8am. I have not had a CRB check done with them (i know I'm safe, but they don't) and they have not asked for proof of ID, references, training certificates...and they just let me go on my own to deal with residents, whom i do not no and they do not know me. I came home mentally drained and feel sick about going back there. to make matters worse, they have put me on overtime for 2 extra shifts a week. can i do anything, other than just quit!!

That's very worrying, and a very unsafe environment for both you and the residents.
I'd suggest you look for a job somewhere else BUT also contact whoever inspects care homes locally and tell them about your experience, you should be able to find them here http://www.csci.org.uk/ You can do this anonymously.
I get the feeling that you'd be very unhappy to continue working there, but also that the welfare of the residents is important to you.

I assume this is a private nursing home you work in. This is appalling for co-workers and residents. Speak to someone at your local citizens advice bureau, or you could always speak to your employer informally to let them know how you feel.

There are rules and regulations regarding staff to patient ratio and the minimum is 3 to 30 for a night shift. 1 of the 3 MUST be a registered nurse.
Overtime is NOT compulsory and you have no legal obligation to work the 2 extra shifts they have put you down for.

As my wife is also a carer (although in the community - not a home) she could NOT have anything to do with the 'clients' until she had had her CRB through..she was allowed to shadow other carers and perform minor tasks (mainly domestic based), best thing to do is contact your nearest CAB and ask for official advice - and if needs be seek legal advice.
