Can someone get into trouble if theyre working, being paid in cash, and then goes and lies to the unemployment office about how they arent able to work when they are 5 days a week?

Yes, you can. You will most likely be fined and have to pay the back pay. I hear-say from a person that another person that they knew did this and she had to pay back. She's not in jail.

If you get caught getting paid under the table you will have to pay self-employment taxes, general income taxes, and a penalty (all the time there are people on Y!A that this happens to). If you also claimed unemployment you will have to pay that money back and most likely an additional. You could also be convicted of a crime and face jail time for lying on signed documentation, although doubtful that would happen. |
