Minimum of 4 hours pay per employee a day?
Find answers to your legal question.

Minimum of 4 hours pay per employee a day?

I have worked for a warehouse company close to a year now. We start at 7AM and work until we finish what we need each day. Sometimes we work as little as 4 hours a day and maybe as much as 10 hours. Today I was asked if I wanted to leave as early as 10:20. This would not even be 3 1/2 hours for me. My boss said if I want to clean until 11:00 I can stay until then. I stayed until 11:00. If I left at 10:30 would I more than likely be paid for 3 1/2 hours or 4 hours on the day? I know I sometimes hear about a minimum of 4 hours per employee per day.

Why on earth didn't you ask him at the time.
No-one on here can possibly answer that question......

If you are in a union, the contract might mandate the 4 hours minimum. Otherwise, not required.

I don't know if this is a law in all states, but in California it is. If you are scheduled to work that day your employer is responsible for paying you for a minimum of 4 hours, even if you are told to leave early. If you worked less than four hours and left by your own choice that would be a different story....

I think they mean a minimum of four hours of work in exchange for four hours of pay. If you willingly leave earlier, after being offered work, they have no obligation to pay you for what you did not earn.

They are probably obligated to offer four hours of work minimum in accordance with a union contract, and not by law.

Best Wishes

your employer would likely only pay you for the exact time worked, unless you contract states that you will be paid for a minimum amount each day.

As long as they at least pay you for every hour you work I think you are better not to worry about whether there is a law which guarantees you some pay for time you don't work.

Especially when the boss is fair enough to offer you a bit of extra work to make up your time.

If you start talking to anyone about your legal entitlements then you are likely to be the first to be let go in any layoffs because firms can't afford to have trouble makers on their payroll.
