First you need to ask for one in no uncertain terms.if you have been a decent employee for 5 years, which if you weren't they would have found someone else.You deserve it.

The government can not tell a place of business that they have to give an employee a pay raise. It is up to your employer to do so. Most minimum wage jobs pay you just that MINIMUM wage. If you are a good worker you may get a pay raise, or if you get a promotion. But just because you have worked there for five years does not mean you are automatically entitled to a pay raise.

As long as you are making at least minimum wage, the employer has no legal requirement to EVER give you a raise. If minimum wage goes up, then you have to be given a raise to keep you at least at minimum wage. Depending on your state, minimum might be going up in a couple weeks. Federal minimum wage goes up as of 7/28/07, but some states already have minimums higher than the new rate so would not be affected. But if you are at the current federal minimum of 5.15 an hour, you should be going to 5.85 as of 7/28.

I dont believe it is against the law as long as you are earning minimum wage of 5.35 per hour. It doesnt state anywhere about an employer having to increase wages. Try ACAS internet site tells you all about your rights.

Um Yeah I think your pose to get a 90 days raise when you first start. And a year raise after that If you are still there. And Y dont u ask him for 1? If u havent. I mean if you havent asked for one and you are not complaining I wouldnt spend more money than I have to either. And if you talk to your employer I'm sure they will understadn your kid situation. If not then search else where. I think If he dont give you one I mean a good one you been working there for 5 years he better not give you a dime or quarter raise.

The employer does not have to give you a pay raise unless minimum wage where you live goes up. So long as they are paying you at least the minimum, there isn't much you can do except ask for a raise. I suspect the reason you haven't gotten a raise is because the employer offers you a fairly flexible schedule, most places won't do this for new hires. Another reason might be high unemployment in your area, this usually brings down wages or prevent them from going up.
