He's been playing this "master/slave" thing with me lately and he's getting worse. I work in a lawfirm where the attys are pretty independent. He calls me or emails me to get a file out of his cabinet which is steps from his office and about 100 steps (no joke!) for me. I'm on another wall of the floor from him! This is a new thing. He heard his neighbor atty doing it with his secretary (and it's pissing her off too) and now he's started it with me. He's never done this before - it's nuts. What can I say to him short of "Get your own damn file"? He is very short and unfortunately has the Napolean complex and I guess feels a need to use his power. It's ridiculous! I'd like to solve it myself without going to personnel. Help!! Additional Details I've been there 15 years and I don't want to jeopardize my job. I'm not sure what personnel would do, probably tell me to go ahead and do it to appease him since technically it's insubordination. It goes further than just doing what my boss tells me to do--it's the principle.

Why is it a "master/slave" thing to do what your boss tells you to do?
Maybe your boss feels you are being overpaid and gets some satisfaction from making you take those 100 steps to get a file.
Personnel will most likely tell you to deal with it or find another job. |

I hate to be unsympethetic but there's nothing wrong with him asking you to do your job. If you're a secretary then filing is a part of your job. If he's your boss then he's not out of line for asking you to do what you're paid to do. 100 steps is not that far a walk, it takes what, about 30 seconds? Additionally, he may not be completely familiar with the filing system (if you're doing your job right he should know virtually nothing about the filing). What would take you a minute to find may take him ten fully justifying the extra 30 second walk to the files.
Also consider, if he had to stop his work to get every file he needed he wouldn't get any work done. That's why attorneys hire secretaries. Maybe the problem is you don't like being a secretary. |

It's your job. Either do it, or begin looking for other employment. His time is actually more valuable, billing-wise, than yours. Therefore it is more practical for you to do the walking then to have him do it.
However, if this is really a sore spot with you, you simply need to find another employer. |

His steps are at least 12 times as expensive as yours. It isn't about you. It is about the bottom line of the firm. Get over it. |

I hate to be compliant in negativity with the others but really I am sure the pay isn't all that horrible considering you are stating they actually have a personnel department and other attorneys and secretaries so if you are getting paid decent or not it's your job to fetch files it's his job to review them he pays you for a reason and that's to keep his files organized and neat my dad's a lawyer and his filing cabinets are in his office and he has the secretaries fetch his files from other floors. It's no big deal just do your job or find one where you feel more appreciated or feel like you have to do less work |

Tell him you are busy. Unless he knows you aren't. Then maybe not. |
