My boss pays me below minimum wage, is there any way I could anomalously report him?

I am 17 and live in Chicago. I work at a pizza place (take-out and delivery only), and I get paid $5.50 and the minimum wage is $6.50 (soon to be $7.50 as of 7-1-07). I have been working there since September. I talked to my uncle about this and he said I could report him and he would have to pay me what I should have earned and minimum wage from then on, is this true?

* My boss sold the place to new owners about a month ago, but he is still there.

If you want to see the money or the investigation then you can not do it anonymously. Otherwise you can call the department of labor in Illinois and report that he is paying you $5.50 per hour and I would speak to the new owners as soon as possible to let them know you are being paid illeagally so they can correct it. I was recently paid because of illegal practices from a job I USED to have. This was as a result of an employee reporting them to the authorities. The new owners should be paying you $6.50 per hour now. Give them the curtesy of telling them you are aware of the state laws and they are in violation of them. They are looking at not only back pay but MAJOR fines and possibly being shut down.

Legally they can pay you below the minimum wage if you get tips or if you are "in training". If neither of these apply to you, I would contact the Department of Labor in your area to see how you should proceed.

Well I do not know about state minimum wage, but the federal wage is only $5.15/hr. Also, some jobs are except from this (mainly food Service jobs). So depending on state and federal law, he may be paying you the correct amount. Call you local chamber of commerce to check on this first.

If you are a tipped employee, you remployer can legally pay below minimum wage, but your tips have to make up the difference and equal a minimum hourley wage. If tips dont tip the scale your employer has to pay the difference so your paycheck reflects the minimum wage status.
You need to carefully read ANY paperwork you may have signed prior to going to work there to make sure of your rights to minimum wage.

Yes. Report him when you really don't want to...You would then be reporting him anomalously. This is different however from reporting him without revealing your identity, which would be reporting him anonymously

The owners would have to pay you, including back wages. Report him to the wage hour administration.
