My dream is to become a lawyer, and I'm considering taking classes to become a paralegal. Is it worth it?

How long will it take to become a paralegal? Is this good experience for aspiring lawyer?

I know of a few people personally who pursued the paralegal profession to "test the waters" prior to deciding on a law career. Today they are very happy and successful- So I would say YES it is definitely worth it. There are many schools that offer certificate programs (if you already have a degree...i.e.:associates degree,bach.etc..) that do not take long at all. 8-10 months, or there are community colleges that offer two year degree plans to become a paralegal. I'm not sure where you live, but you should consider contacting your local junior colleges for more info. Whatever you decide - Good luck!!! Below are a few references:

It is not good experience (except perhaps as a law student). If you want to become a lawyer, go to law school, get loans, limit your expenses and go for it, you will make your money back after you pass the bar.

I am a paralegal and have been for about 10 years. Depending on what country you are in, there may be a paralegal course you can undertake. If not, it is likely that you will have to start in admin and apply for any paralegal positions you can. It shouldn't take long, but if you can afford to work as a paralegal and study law at the same time, the experience will be invaluable.

The law is such an interesting field in which to work. I wish you all the luck in the world!

The opportunities for a paralegal really depends on the specialty. The most in demand paralegals are those in the litigation field; followed by corporate paralegals who are responsible for maintaining corporate records, articles of incorporation, etc. While the "least" markeable [but the "highest" paid] paralegals are in the field of intellectual property [i.e., patents, trademarks] and immigration law. In conclusion, choose your paralegal courses accordingly, with emphasis on litigation preparation [discovery], docketing/calendaring of incoming pleadings [calendaring] and trial preparation [creating Exhibit tabs, Bajii jury instructions, etc.]. The "pro" side of a litigation paralegal is often "unlimited" overtime which can amount to a high salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 per year, while the "downside," being constantly pressured to meet a monthly client billable quota. And failing to meet that quota, often results in the paralegal's overnight dismissal. It's not a pretty picture. I just want to lay out what really happens in the real world of litigators and their relationship with subordinate paralegals.

Good luck!
