My employer wants to take money they claim i have been overpaid from my wages?
Find answers to your legal question.

My employer wants to take money they claim i have been overpaid from my wages?

I have been working for my current employer for 7 years and I was promoted back in march and recieved a new contract which i signed stating i am now on pay band 5. However today my manager called me in and told me that in my position i should only be on 75% of band 5. They now want to lower my salary and take the money they have been overpaying me since march out of my wages.
Am i right in thinking that they cant do this as i am being paid in accordance with my contract? It would be understandable if my contract stated i should be on 75% and i had been overpaid, but can they legally take money out of my wages if i am being paid in line with my contract?
I dont really know what to do about this, i didnt know i should have been on lower pay and neither it seems did my employer. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ask the employer to show you where it is written that you entitled to only 75% of band 5.

You may want to talk an official from the governmental department that regulates employment practices in your area.

You may have the basis for a lawsuit, but only a legal professional can guide you there. You need to consider what your work environment will be after that.

You might consider employment elsewhere, after all this transpires. You are the best one to evaluate that.

I don't think that you should give your money back that is ridiculous. But maybe you should make a deal with them in your salary. Don't make it as low as they want it just make it in between.
