My ex-employer has threatened a lawyer on me!?

My best friend and I worked at a daycare center that has rats. We gave our letters of resignation, turned in our keys, and our time cards.

Our boss contacted the other employee who quit, my friend, today, and told her that I would be recieving papers from their attorney regarding me slandering them, and going after the one owner personally through the buisness by trying to get her kicked out of her house. I haven't tried to get her kicked out of her house, but I did contact proper authorities for the rat infestation. I contacted the parents who's info I knew, the health department, and a newspaper, who didn't actuallly get to run an article. I just don't feel it's fair that their somehow able to keep all of this a secret from parents whose kids are playing in rat urine and droppings. I do have photographs of damage done by the rats, and droppings and urine. I really need an opinion here, preferably a legal one. All I was doing was removing myself from the health risk and trying to inform the parents. I cn't afford to retain a lawyer!! Help!

Don't worry. What you did is NOT ILLEGAL! The only way they can get you is if you LIED. But since you didn't lie...you are fine. Let them get a lawyer and waste their time and money. Good job for being strong enough to do something about that horrible daycare!

They will have to prove you were lying and they are totally not at fault. Slander is often very tough to prove. Don't worry for now. The letter from the attorney will probably just be a cease and desist letter.

You probably shouldn't have contacted the parents, just the authorities. You did the moral thing, but maybe not the smart thing.

Don't worry until you get the letter. Then you might try contacting the nearest TV station. Maybe they will help you.

I would not worry as long as you told the truth. You have a right to call the health department. Slander is hard to prove and is only proven if you lied on them. I would talk to a secretary at an attorney's office. Many times they will give free advice over the phone. I wouldn't talk to the boss at all for now.

Contact the local TV station and tell them you've got a great story about a company punishing a former employee for reporting a health hazard. That kind of media pressure made Wal-mart back down.

telling the truth and proving the truth are two different thuings, even if it did happen as you state can you prove it? if the newspaper declined to run the story maybe they didn't see the evidence you saw
