My friend's employer called to verify her doctors note. Can they do this?
Find answers to your legal question.

My friend's employer called to verify her doctors note. Can they do this?

She's pretty sure they just wanted to check and see if she REALLY had an appointment and not sneaking off to a job interview. The appointment really was legit but she felt a little violated and I think I would have too.

I'm in HR and have to do this all the time. She should only feel violated if she did something wrong. The Doctor is not going to tell them why she went, but will tell them exactly what's on the note she gave them anyway.

Lys C
They can call but the doctor shouldn't verify anything without her consent - it is a violation of HIPPA.

Pyar
Yup .. they can do it ... what good is a note if no one can verify it.

Sandra M
They most certainly can call to check if she had an appointment. If she provided them with a doctors note, they have the right to call and check it out. It is a part of her employee file at this point and it is their property.

damn right they can do it....
otherwise everyone would lie or forge notes without any comeuppance

Judy
They can, legally.

charliedontsurf
Of course they can.

absolutley, especially if they have some reason to suspect.even if they dont, it's perfectly within thier right as an employer to get general infor on where you were at a particular time.

Absolutely, so long as they did not ask about her health related issues with the doctor.

I think the better question here would be, "My friend's employer called to verify her doctors note. Can anyone offer her a referral to a better company that is flexible, values family, and allows their employees to have a personal life outside of work."

WOW - I thought PERSONAL time was PERSONAL.

I would never give out such information to any employer.
