My grandma is forced to work overtime, help?

My grandma is forced to work overtime, help?

My grandma wants to stay working, but only on her regular days which is Monday through Wednesday. Now, with black friday they are forcing her to work from 4am to 9:30 pm and then 11 hours on Saturday. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my grandma is getting ssi. She can quit to get more money, but she doesn't want to be staying at home all the time. She's in her 70's, so she wants to be active. But she's not thrilled about being forced to work overtime when she doesn't want it. We live in California and she works for retail. I want her to quit. Is there something she can do besides quit? I never heard about people being forced to work overtime legally, but I searched around and saw it is.

Corn is not dog food! No wheat!
In most employment packets (filled out and signed when you're hired at a job) they have a clause that states something like, "Overtime may be mandatory during peak seasons..."

At least, there has been at every job I've ever had.

So, basically, it's a requirement to work overtime if it's assigned. As long is she's getting paid properly, it's legal.

It isn't "overtime" in most states unless she is working more than 40 a week. She needs to go to her boss and explain that she is 70 years old and just can't do those kinds of hours. It is reasonable for them to expect her to work on black Friday, as usually that is an all hands on deck kind of day, but certainly NOT those kinds of hours. She needs to tell them that she simply can't work a 16 hour day, that is totally unreasonable. Are you sure it wasn't a mistake? What company is this for? She really should sit down with her manager, and explain that she is glad to help out where needed, but there has to be limits. If they don't understand, than they do not deserve her.

If someone works in retail, they're almost sure to be working extra hours this weekend since it's so busy, and then probably some extra until the end of the year.

Damn !! I'm trying to find work. At my current job, I never get more than 10 hrs a week.

This is retail's busiest time of the year. If she cannot work the hours they need her to work then they can legally find someone else to do it.

This is Your Grandmother's Choice. She's Lucky she's got a job & WANTS to work... -and NOT so lucky she has to work so much over the Holiday! This is the "way it is". Hopefully- she's ALSO making Overtime PAY...-Which means that with the extra $$$ she'll be making this Weekend, she might NOT have to work over the Christmas Holidays! So if She can "hold out" for just a LITTLE longer, maybe She can QUIT Her job, -and share a VERY Merry Christmas- with You !!! :)
