My local council are accessing personal information information about me from the DWP. Is this legal?

I'm thinking DPA/Civil Liberties infringement possibly.

Council Tax bill > My DWP details being looked at

Potentially it's legal. However, I would take the step of doing a subject access request to your local council to find out what information is being passed to DWP and why, as they do not have carte blanche to do whatever they want (contrary to what they think). Once you have found out what and why they passed the information, it is only then that you ascertain whether there is a breach in the DPA. If there is, then complain to the Information Commissioner's Office in Wilmslow and they will take it from there (see source).

On the other hand, they could have just mixed your records up with someone else's (councils are very good at keeping records accurate and up to date, not) and so the comment about the DWP was not actually in relation to you. This will be revealed as part of your subject access request.

Yes they can do this.

There is, unfortunately, no action that you can take to stop them.

Some people campaigned vociferously for this legislation to be abandoned and were howled down by those who said 'why would you mind if you have nothing to hide'

This is the same legislation that allows councils to spy on the personal lives of people who want to send their kids to a certain school etc etc.

It won't help you, it's too late for that. But you could contact your MP and the relevant pressure groups about how this act is being misused (exactly as predicted) and argue to have it overturned.

Sorry it's not better news :(

Unfortunately it is legal (it may not be moral but it is legal)

These jumped up self important twerps who want to run our lives can access any information about you by using the raft of supposed anti terror legislation brought in over the past couple of years.

A local authority in the South East used anti terror legislation recently to spy on a couple to ensure they lived where they said they did on a school application.
