I was terminated from my job at Dillards on 7/9/2007 for being tardy, which I fully take responsibility for. I knew I was tardy, and I knew I would be terminated. One of my co-workers said that a manager came up to her on 7/10/07 and said that whenever I worked nights in my department by myself, I would have my friends come in and steal whatever they wanted. I had been working for Dillards for a year, I am African American, and never once have I been confronted by any management about letting people steal. This is totally untrue and I am so angry. I asked my friend if she could write down everything the manager told her on paper and sign it and she did. The manager also said this to another worker, so I asked her to sign the paper too, and she did. These girls have worked with me and they know I have never let anyone come into the store and steal. I don't know where this is coming from. What should I do? Is this defamation of character, slander, ect?

Sorry about your recent situation.
Since you no longer work there, I doubt there is much you can do. If it will make you feel better, you can phone this manager, or write a letter explaining this, but like I said before it probably won't do much good.
Who knows what motivates people to say the things they do. It is one of life's many mysteries. Take comfort in knowing in your heart that you did nothing wrong. The more of a big deal you make it, the more guilty you will seem to others.
Try to drop it, and move on.
Good luck,
Stevo. |

I would contact the person, the manager, and tell him that you take these accusations very seriously and that if he doesn't contact the police about the alleged theft that you will. If he was suggesting that you may have let people steal something, I don't know if that would be considered slander/libel, but if he referred to you as a thief, or something more direct, then you might have a case. But the best way to make progress in a situation like this is to tell him that you want to clear your name and the best way for you to do this is for the police to investigate. That usually ends all of the bullcrap really quickly, because if he is knowingly telling others of something that is false, then he will at most really lose his job. Keep in mind that I know Dillard's keeps dilligent video records - and if something was happening, they probably will have it on tape. If nothing happened, then that's better for you - videos don't like (usually) |

if in trying to get a new job, you have problems because of this supervisor - you should definitely take the paper to a lawyer. |

Email this question to the headquarters and reference your subject as "The Dillard Family Integrity". It is still one of the most recognized names in Dallas and also one of the most respected in the business world. Anecdotes of the family's constant commitment to their retail family are a major reason they still compete in the "big-box" era. This would, almost certainly, be a futile effort at Target or Wal-mart; however, I would be very surprised if you do not receive an acknowledgment, at the very least. Good Luck. |

I would contact the HR department and let them know that although you no longer work at Dillard's that one of their employees is spreading lies about you and making other coworkers uncomfortable, let them know that you would like this issue resolved.
If the girl is your friend I suggest she also calls HR to tell on the manager, hopefully it will be resolved. This is unprofessional. |

Notify the NAACP or the Civil Liberties Union. The store has tapes of activity. Ask to see the tapes. |

Well, nothing because they said it after the fact and not only that why would your boss believe them if you never did it before.. I would however, not let future employers call them in case it does get on your record but you really have no clue if they did other than being tardy... |
