So, I went to NJ department of labor to find out about an extension (my 6 months is up in 3 weeks), and I was informed that since my unemployment did not run out before March 22, 2009, I was not eligible for an extension. I have been actively looking for a job with absolutely NO luck. I was wondering if anyone knows anything the eligibility of an extension or if anyone else has experienced a similar situation.

That just doesn't sound right. Obama's stimulus package extended deadlines for unemployment extension eligibility. The NJ website doesn't have anything mentioning deadlines that I can see. (I looked here: http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/ui/ui_index.html )
Go back and ask for something in writing showing the eligibility dates. Try to speak to a different person, as the first one may have been wrong. Or call the state offices for confirmation. Try to apply for the entended benefits, and then appeal if you get a denial.
Until you've appealed and a determination has been made, continue to file your claims, so they can give back benefits if they find inyour favor.
Still, it shouldn't come to an appeal. You may not be eligible for Tier 2 benefits, but you should be eligible for Tier 1.
Granted, states are allowed to handle unemployment benefits differently, but the timelines should be the same. Here are the dealines for PA:
No new EUC accounts will be established for claimants who exhaust their regular state UC after the week ending December 19, 2009.
You are NOT eligible for Tier 2 EUC if you exhaust your Tier 1 benefits after the week ending December 26, 2009.
If PA has until December, so should NJ. |
