Can an employer write you up while your on your personal time? Here is the Jist. I Work at a Milwaukee Hotel and Have been written up for requesting that the shuttle pick me up and return me to the hotel at witch i also reside. I was at a drinking establishment a mile down the road. I feel the on duty staff was responcible for the desision to pick me up as they could have said no. Also It is mentioned on the wright up that myself and the staff who were on duty (I was again off duty) were out side the front door smoking leaving the desk unattended (the door was open and you can Clearly hear the phone from the outside and the desk is with in veiw.
Is it right that I am reciving this write up for conduct on my personal time?

leysarob, I think you miss my point. I was not on the clock or assigned to the desk when the desk was left unattended. (It is also a long standing tradition at our location to go out the front door to smoke, our GM and the Prior GM both smoke and have left the desk to take a few puffs.) This feels like sour grapes.
I Also feel that (since it is alowed at our establishment to use the shuttle to get food/lunch) and that my pick up piont was with-in a block of the Mc-Ds they go to It should have been nobig deal, If it was a problem the onduty staff should be responcible they drove the van and picked me up. I may have requested a ride however they could have said no. (again we have driven the GM on personal arends.) This is a case of do what I say not what I do.

They should not be able to write you up, based on your off duty status

Of course you can be written up for things that occurred on site. The shuttle picking you up a bar is a misuse of the hotel property.
Leaving the desk to smoke is poor behavior as well. Even if you can hear the phone. I would say you are close to termination unless you improve your actions and get a better attitude. |

I also work for a hotel and yes you can be written up while you are off duty. You can NOT be written up for things you have done while you are off duty. Like the smoking outside while off the clock unless it has been stated that you are not aloud to. like you were told you can not smoke while you are on propority weather you are working or not.
If is has been oked that you are able to use the shuttle while you are working and/or not working then NO you can not be written up for it.
Have you and the other employees been told not to leave the desk other then to help a guest or use the bathroom.? If you have then yes, you can be written up it. |
