Need some CAREER ADVICE from people in the Legal Field?

I currently work in the Legal Department of a Fortune 500 as a legal assistant. I am a college graduate and a certified paralegal.
I work for a great company but there aren't much growth opportunities available for a certified paralegal in the company I work for. Many of the paralegal level job functions that are done by paralegals in other legal depts at other companies are being done by recent law school graduates ( JDs ) in the company I work for. So, the problem is not so much that there AREN'T growth opportunities, but that opportunities aren't made available to people who aren't JDs.
Although I really like the people I work with, I may need to start looking for another job to seek out growth opportunities. The other option, I think , is to talk with my boss to see if he is willing to offer me growth opportunities within the legal dept of the company (which is unlikely given what I mentioned above).
What do YOU think I should do? Any suggestions?

If you like where you are, talk to your boss. Don't threaten to leave, but say that you feel you are capable of doing more than you are, and ask what growth opportunities might be available to you. If nothing changes, then start looking around. |

Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! Jobs in the law field that DO exist today are cutting way back on pay increases - of course they don't want you to explore "GROWTH" - they don't want to have to pay you more.
You have personally seen evidence of the saturation of the job market with TOO MANY law students - you say that many of the paralegal level job functions are being done by recent law graduates (JDs)
Plus those in the field of Law today are a dime a dozen - the job market is SATURATED.
The field of Law is NOT a good field to invest in!!! Reasons? very bad economy, too many people today think they can just do their own legal work thanks to the WWWeb, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates for the demand and economy (the law schools won't tell you this - law students are easy money).
Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare!!! <<< There are LOTS of jobs there!!! Believe it or not, even with your background!!! |
