No Pay during training?
Find answers to your legal question.

No Pay during training?

Is it legal to not pay someone while they are training for a job? If you can give me any references, that would help.

Thanks.
Additional Details
It's a receptionist type job, the pay doesn't start until after training for 20 hours.

IF they are covered by FLSA then you must be paid.
training and orientation are work hours and considered an expense of doing business. it does not matter what the job is if the employer is covered by FLSA (which most employers are) then you should be getting paid.

IF your employer wants to claim this is a "working interview":

working interviews are only legal if no work that is of benefit to the employer is performed and the interview is only used to prove your ability to perform the essential functions of the job. the working interview must be limited in time to only a reasonable amount to complete the appropriate testing.

Probably not legal ... you should be paid for all hours worked. Training is still considered working -- and likely should be paid if the employer is subject FLSA. See the link below.

Depends on the type of job and in what context the training is for... but basically, unless it is a exempt position, you have to be paid for all hours worked... check with your state labor laws...

No, in the US they'd legally have to pay you at least minimum wage for that time.

There is no such thing as "training period" for a regular and the denial of payment is perse illegal !

If it is an interview then no, but if they have you actually doing the work/job itself then the company is required by law to pay you for all hours worked.

Would be nice if folk put where they are from as regulations are different in say UK to USA. Some idiot down rated my comment, I think my comment is a fair statement and if all askers put where they were from it would help them to get proper answers.

Hopeful
They could legally call it a "Training Interview" which they don't have to pay you for.
