Offered a job, signed job contract but offer was retracted at the last minute?
Find answers to your legal question.

Offered a job, signed job contract but offer was retracted at the last minute?

I have been offered a graduate position in a consultancy firm back in April 08 and I have signed and return back the contract to the company at the end of April. As per normal practice, they have send me a thank you note and also invited me for the graduate function. All of a sudden (on the 16th July 08), the company send me a letter to notify that my contract has been retracted, stating that due to the resturucturing of the company, certain projects which I was initially involved in has been cancelled, and hence they could not offer me the contract any longer.

My main concern now is I have stop looking or applying for any other jobs alltogether back in April once I have accepted this job offer. It is the mid of July now, and most companies graduate position application has pass its deadline. Am I supposed to just reply to them 'Thank you so much for the info, I really appreciate all the troubles you have gone through'? Is it legal for the company to just retract the contract back?

I would express this to them and if no decent offer is made.hire an attorney as you have incurred a financial loss

if they signed the contract as you did then it is a binding contract---do you have a copy of contract with their signature on it?

Judy
Did they also sign the contract? If so, it's binding, so read it and see what their rights are to terminate it. They don't have to still have a position for you, but might have to pay you something.

Good luck - this is tough, since you're right, many companies have already done their hiring.

Key question: what country are you in? Ordinarily, I assume that people who don't bother to say are in the US, since people in other countries seem pretty good about *not* assuming every one else on the Internet is from their country. However, nobody in the US (that I know, anyway) would call July 16th "16th July."

Another big question, wherever you are, but particularly on the off-chance you're in the US is: what does your contract say?

At least in the US, the vast majority of employment contracts, particularly for entry-level positions, do not alter your at-will status.

I'm not sure if what they did was legal or not, but it was a crappy thing to do! I think that there are a lot of companies that are really struggling, and cutting back what they can! Luckily for me, the company I work with is great and just keeps growing! Check out my website and let me know if you want more info.
