A coworker and I have been wondering if its legal that I have to help my office move to another office. I am an hourly employee and so is my coworker. The move will take place after hours and I will have to move boxes and possibly use my car. Is this legal?

It is legal but you should be paid overtime for after hours and get paid for the milage on your car - I think it's about $0.45 per mile. |

Yes, but they're stupid to do it that way. If you hurt yourself moving boxes, which I assume you don't normally do, then they have to pay you Workers Comp. |

It depends on what is on your contract, it may say that you must be flexible with your hours for clients but I don't think you should have to do it for moving offices. If you have to use your car make sure they give you petrol money before you go anywhere. |

Unfortunately it is legal, but speak to your manager/supervisor to verify that you are going to be paid overtime hours that you will be working, find out if they are going to pay you mileage for use of your car (which is required), and make sure they understand that if any one gets hurt it will be a workers comp. claim. It doesn't matter what the policy is written or framed, it is in the line of work and you are there at their request or direction so it is job related and compensible to the employer.
Most places will have the employees pack up the boxes, but normally they will bring movers in to actually move the stuff to the new location. |
