A W-4 is used for withholding taxes from an employer. A driver's license has absolutely NOTHING to do with your pay and withholding for social security and income taxes. If anything, it is your taxpayer ID number, your social security number, that is of importance. What does your driver's license have to do with social security, income tax or anything involved with your pay from an employer? |

Why do they need a driver's license for your W-4? That's a tax document.
You probably mean the I-9, which employers use to establish your ability to work legally in the US. That requires a photo ID to prove your identity. Your permit probably will not meet the requirement (there is a very specific list of documents that can be accepted by the employer.) A U.S. birth certificate or current passport would work just fine. |

A W-4 doesn't ask for a driver's license, but your employer probably wants to see it to fill out an I-9 form. If the permit has your picture, it will probably work - otherwise probably not. |

Yes. when issued a permit you are issued a driver's license number which will be listed on the permit even though you don't have a license yet.
Edit for second poster:
Most employer's require two forms of identification one of which is listed as a photo ID which most employer's simply will ask for a driver's licence. The newer tax information forms also ask for a driver's license number if applicable. I assume it's for identity verification. |
