Hello.. i was wondering if getting paid time and a half for more than 40 hours a week is mandatory for employers.. In my other jobs it was always this way but in my new job (plumbing) they only paid me straight for the 15 hours overtime i worked. i am not in a union but that never mattered before.. So again my question is should they be paying me more for my extra hours? thanks

Yes. Companies are required to pay time and a half after 40hrs. It is a standard OSHA rule. You need look in your handbook or talk to payroll. Hope this helps. |

if you are a regular plumber you should probably be entitled to overtime. If you are a manager than probably not contact your states department of labor. |

You will need to look at the language of your initial job offer (if it was in writing). There are certain classes in the skilled-trades arena that are exempted from overtime pay. Your best bet would be to contact your local state employment office (job service/workforce development) and ask them. They are the folks in charge of regulating employment related matters in the state.

It is in some industries, but not in others. I'm not familiar with the rules for the trades.
Visit www.dol.gov and find the "wage order" for your industry. Now look under "overtime pay." This will tell you how OT should be calculated and paid.
It's possible that if you are non-union you are classed at an apprentice level and thus may be exempt from OT - but again, I'm not familiar enough with the wage order for that industry to advise you with any degree of confidence.

They do have to pay overtime by law. However, at my company anything worked over 8 hours was then considered overtime pay. So if you worked 50 hours that week but never worked more than 8 hours a day, you wouldn't get overtime pay. Gay huh? |

anything over 40 hours a week should be overtime,unless your on salary.
Contact your local labor board to be sure. |
