Overtime and Break Hour Laws in California?

I need help! I'm confused with the law and my employers. I work 30 hrs a week. On some days I work 9 hours with 1 hour breaks and on some days I work 9 1/2 hours with 1 1/2 hour breaks. Is that legal for them to extend my lunch hours so that I wont get paid more than 8hrs for work? Also, my boss is saying that second breaks are not mandatory and I work more than 8 hours and did not signed any waivers whatsoever. I work in California, in a bank. Help me find the answers.

Whenever you work 8 hrs or more normally you're entitled to a 30 minute lunch (depending on places they may extend it to an hour)

But they cannot extend your lunch to 1hr 30mins (or shouldn't anyway) weather you work 9 or 9 1/2 hrs.

I live in MD so I'm not 100% of the rules in CA but at my work I work 8-9 hr days, get a 30 min unpaid lunch break and 2 15 minute paid breaks if I choose to take them.

I have friends who live in other states and their breaks seem to work the same way. I would call your human resources dept and just ask a few questions, you don't even have to tell them your name

they dont want you to be full time and also they dont want you to have overtime.their supposed to give you breaks two hours after your start work and a lunch after that. its their decision on how long they want to give you it can range from either 30 minutes or an hour

For every 4 hours worked, an employee is entitled to a 15 minute break. For 6 hours worked (please double check this) I believe it is a 1/2 hour lunch break. Usually, for an 8 hour day, you take an hour lunch. Some people take breaks, some don't, but for hourly people, these breaks and lunch breaks are actually required. You may want to Google "Labor Laws" to check the times on all this. It does sound a little odd for them to have you take an hour and a half lunch. It sounds like they want you to arrive at a given time and then leave at a given time, but that the times they are trying to cover (span) is actually 9 and 1/2 hour, so they are making you take 1 and 1/2 hour lunch, which comes down to a savings in money for them. It sounds fishy - I'd definitely check it with a reputable source - it's worth looking into.

Yes they can give you a longer lunch break than legally required, and if that means that you are only working 8 hours of the 9-1/2 between your start and end time, then you aren't eligible for overtime.
