Overtime / contract legal question ?

If you have been working 20 + hours your contract time, for over 3 months, can a workplace suddenly lower your hours to contract only with 2 days notice.

I am on an 11 hour contract but my overtime means I work 30 + (paid) hours a week. My employer has announced that from Monday, I am only allowed to do my contracted 11 hours a week due to low budgets.

Is this legal? I heard someone say that if you have worked the same hours in a day for over 3 months, you are entitled to keep those hours / have more notice. Any links to websites would be most welcome.

Thanks.

You don't say where you are, but in the US it's legal. Other countries might have a law like the one you refer to.

I go to law school, but I'm not sure exactly how to answer your question legally. However, something quite similar happened to me. I was working 25+ hours for about a year and one day I came into work and looked at the schedule and I only had 9 hours. I was pissed! I called my union and everything, and my company told me that they lowered my hours because they didn't have enough payroll to pay everyone (and although I been there 4 years, thats still lower on the seniorty list, so they hit me with less hours.) So, I think they can do that. Did you sign a contract that stated you were part time or full time? Because if you signed a part time contract, than they can give you whatever amount of hours they like really, as long as it's under 40 hours a week. Also, to answer this question in a legal form, I'd need to know your state of residency, because laws vary by state. Try googling stuff like "job cut my hours" and stuff like that. There's bound to be something. Good luck
