[[PLEASE PLEASE HELP!]] Lawyers and Dentist........?

I really need help with this. I really want to be a dentist. This has major pros to me because there is a huge shortage of dentists and It's just something that I would enjoy doing very much. The cons of this is that I have a much harder time with math and science and thats what I need to study a lot to become a dentist.
I'm a sophomore in high school. I am really good at english and writing and researching and creative things and I am also really into politics. I have always breezed through all my english social studies history and writing classes but it's been extremely hard for me to get good grades in math and science.
My "gift" in life is that I am extremely motivated, determined, and goal-orientated. If I want something, I WILL get it. I really like to debate and people have always told me I would make a great lawyer. I wouldn't mind being a lawyer and I know those things are my strong points. The only thing is that there are way too many lawyers in America right now and I think it would be hard to find work. Plus I think that lawyers have to work ALL the time and dentists only have to work five days a week.
So in short, I want to be a dentist, but getting through the eight years of school would be he hardest thing I could ever do, though I would be much happier once I started my career. I have all the natural talent to make a great lawyer and college wouldn't be nearly as much of a struggle for me, but I'm not convinced that I would be as happy with my career.
So PLEASE PLEASE help me!
I WILL CHOOSE A BEST ANSWER!!

You have a great ambition.
I would suggest before making any life-altering decisions that you are still in high school, although it's always beneficial to have an attainable goal in mind. I would also suggest that there isn't really a shortage of dentists -- they are certainly less abundant than lawyers though. A dentist can, however, build a very successful practice and not have to put in the same hours as a lawyer on a week-to-week basis.
Something else to consider is that a bar admission allows you to function successfully in a huge variety corporate roles; whereas a doctor of dentistry has a narrowly-focused skill set.
You are pretty close with the amount of schooling required to become a dentist, but a lawyer has to complete an undergraduate degree (min. three years) attend 2 years of law school and then their articling/internship for an additional year -- so you are talking about 6 years before you can even write the bar admissions test. So, you have a minimum of 6 years for law and 8 years for dental. In the grand scheme of things, the duration shouldn't really be considered (just the opinion of someone who took the 6-year route).
Best of luck to you in the future -- and relax, you still have lot's of time. You may wake up one day and say "Hey, I think strategic management is for me", and look into doing an MBA or something like that. |

Since you're only halfway through high school, you don't have to worry too much about what job you want, although it's great that you already have careers in mind! You should look into both dentistry and law and find out as much as you can about both. Try talking to people in both fields.
You still have the rest of high school and the first two years of college to decide. Who knows, maybe you'll find something you like even better by the time you need to make a choice! Go with whatever you feel you will be happiest with- just because you are skilled at something doesn't mean you will enjoy doing it, and just because something is more difficult doesn't mean that you won't be happy once you accomplish it. |
