I have decided to pursue this career field also. From what i have gathered a degree or certificate is required. The hours are long, the pay can be rewarding and it seem like a job you really have to be dedicated to and be able to give up some personal time.
My plan it to get my undergraduate degree is something related but not paralegal studies like criminal justice, sociology, criminology, etc and the get my paralegal certificate. I would like to go to Emory University to get that. Three reasons why i am getting an undergrad degree: better resume, a degree can be expaned on (masters, etc) and if i decide that the paralegal field is not for me i can go into someting else by post grad certificates, masters, or secondary undergrad degree.
Some advantages to a paralegal is that it seems you can choose a field to go into. I would like to go into taxes, real estate, wills, bankruptcy or patents and contracts. The reason why is that those specialties seem to have the need for a paralegals over a criminal lawyer.
Some disadvantages: disrespect from some laywers from the fact that they are under alot of pressure from deadlines. Also it seems that paralegals especially those who have no experience have a hard time finding a job and if hired it might only be a temp.
My plans are after i finish school and get my certificate is to work part time at a local law frim and in leiu of pay, a recommendation for future employeers. I will have my degree in two years and my certificate within a year after that and i need to work another 2 years after that at my current job to be entitled for my pension plan when i eventually retire so that is why i can work for free part time as a paralegal after graduation.
Good luck in you career!!

The opportunities for a paralegal really depends on the specialty. The most in demand paralegals are those in the litigation field; followed by corporate paralegals who are responsible for maintaining corporate records, articles of incorporation, etc. While the "least" markeable [but the "highest" paid] paralegals are in the field of intellectual property [i.e., patents, trademarks] and immigration law. In conclusion, choose your paralegal courses accordingly, with emphasis on litigation preparation [discovery], docketing/calendaring of incoming pleadings [calendaring] and trial preparation [creating Exhibit tabs, Bajii jury instructions, etc.]. The "pro" side of a litigation paralegal is often "unlimited" overtime which can amount to a high salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 per year, while the "downside," being constantly pressured to meet a monthly client billable quota. And failing to meet that quota, often results in the paralegal's overnight dismissal. It's not a pretty picture. I just want to lay out what really happens in the real world of litigators and their relationship with subordinate paralegals.

Good luck!
