Policy regarding overtime pay in california?

I live in California. I work part-time (hourly) at Ross. What's the policy about overtime pay? I heard that you get overtime pay for working over an 8 hour shift.

What if, for example, I was only scheduled to work from 10-3, but I was asked to stay until 5. Should the extra two hours be counted as overtime pay or not?

And does anybody know the minimum wage in Ca right now?

1. california pays overtime of 'time-and-a-half' for over 8 hours a day and double time for over 12 hours a day as well as 'time-and-a-half' for all hours over 40 in a work-week.

if you work more then 30 hours a week and work all seven days of the week then the seventh day is overtime of 'time-and-a-half' for the first 8 hours and double time for all hours after that.

Federal law requires overtime pay for over 40 hours a week. CA extends that rule, and requires overtime pay for hours over 8 in a day as well. By my count, 10-5 is 7 hours, so no you wouldn't get overtime pay for it. The fact that those hours were not scheduled originally doesn't make them overtime.

Minimum in CA is $8 an hour

In general, overtime is paid for work hours over 40 per week. You might work 20 hours in one day and not be paid overtime if you only worked 39 hours in the week.
