No, it does not take 8-10 years to become a corporate lawyer. It can be done in 7 - 4 undergrad and 3 law school.
Like someone else said it depends on where you are and the size of the firm. Generally, to be a corporate lawyer the firm must be reasonably large. However, to get a job at the larger firms you must have solid grades. In the Midwest - starting salary at a large firm will range from 80 - 100 depending on the city. |

Average salary would depend on location of the firm - large city corporations tend to offer higher salaries - you'd just have to do some checking. As far as pros: someone takes care of the 'nuts and bolts' - renting office space, taking care of support staff, library, secretarial needs and such. There may be job security depending on the corporation and one's performance - could have 401K, profit sharing, health insurance, paid vacations, etc. Cons: the corporation's interests must always be served despite one's own personal take on the case. In other words, you may be assigned to defend the corporation when it was in the wrong and this may go against your own sense of ethics. Also, the work may be routine - boring stuff - you may have to work with people you don't care for & deal with office politics, etc. |

cons
have to study at least 7 years, but it's actually more like 8 -10 years since you don't study in a linear timeline. you take summer breaks and stuff, and have to get money |
