Purchasing own supplies for present job?

I work for a towing company and I was recently told that I have to purchase my own supplies such as tools and equipment for people who lock themselves out of their car and maybe other stuff as well. Now I only make $9/hr and I cant afford that. Is that legal to force employees to buy supplies that are particular to their job. This stuff can get expensive. around $150 maybe even more.
Please only answear if you are familiar with law. Thanking you kindly

It depends what state you are in. In california, it is typical for the employer to have to pay for any and all supplies necessary but considering what you do, it may be different. I know that state law requires that a store provide the knives a meat cutter needs to use but we buy and use our own (meat cutter are very particular with what knives they are using). |

They can't force you to buy the tools. But they can require it as part of your job if you want to keep it, even if it's a new requirement. |

Sure it's legal which is why at tax time you can deduct non-reimbursed employee expenses. These include things like travel time, uniforms, and supplies. This kind of stuff is usually brought up during the hiring process ~ unless your company has recently had a policy change.
This practice seems to be typical with businesses in which the employees are "out in the field". I suppose the reasoning behind it is that you will take better care of your own personal supplies than ones provided by the company. I've worked in several businesses in which I had to provide my own supplies & uniforms. I just considered it the cost of having that particular job. |
