Question about conviction/job application?

I was caught for shoplifting last week.. and I haven't been contacted with anything that will happen because of it. The cops weren't involved.
I was wondering if, on a job application, would I check "no" for ever being convicted? What exactly does a conviction literally mean? It's for Michaels, by the way. Thank you for any information!

It's a huge regret.. don't give me any flack for it. I'm well aware.
Additional Details
Ok, well thank you so much. But I thought it took time for this stuff to get through the system? So won't I be getting a call in the future? Or would that have happened already?

Well I think that you should turn your talents to other things than stealing other peoples property. To answer your question, the answer is "No" you have never been convicted unless you were arrested by the police, taken to court and found guilty of the offense. I think you got off lightly really, as this is quite a serious offense.
If in future you need to fill in any type of form where it requires you to state if you have ever been convicted of a criminal offense then you would certainly write "No". Think yourself lucky that the police were not involved as this would have gone on your record and would have shown up on official records for the rest of your life.
The people who caught you stealing would be required to involve the police more or less straight away, they cannot wait for a whole period of time then start making complaints. Perhaps you were given a warning by the store that if you are caught shoplifting again then the police would become involved. Nowadays a lot of petty shoplifting is being dealt with in house so to speak, rather than expensive litigation which costs time and money and normally for such little return to the store in question, and it puts their insurance premiums up.

i work for a background screeening company and search for 200 names a day ..you dont have to mention anything about the shoplift in your resume..you are not convicted .. A conviction means you meet the judge and he gives you a court supervision or a fine ..A case should have been registered ..Looks like a case is not registered in your name.. its most likely that you have been pardoned.
unless you have met a cop, a judge ...and a court house no one is really going to know ..so just forget the whole issue and put it behind tou ....

Conviction means you were arrested and found guilty or pleaded guilty. You were neither arrested nor convicted.

You were wildly lucky - don't count on getting that kind of break a second time.
