Question about hours beeing cut at work?

i work in a nursing home and for the second time they have cut my shifts, the first time the did it was in november and they cut my shifts from three 12hour night duty's to two 12hour night duty's a week without giving me any notice of doing such, they also cut the amount of staff on a night duty from two carer's and a nurse to one carer and a nurse. and now again they have cut my shifts from two 12hour night duty's to one 12hour night duty a week without any notice whatsoever. can anyone tell me if they are allowed to do this and what i can do about this as i am currently not earning enough to cover my bills. if any more information is needed please let me know.

They have no legal obligations to give you a certain number of hours per week, nor do they have any obligation to give you advanced notice of the changes.
Its possible that there are local laws that require them to have a certain number of people on staff at any given time based on how many patients they have, but if they are violating a law like this the issue would be between the patients and the company and it wouldn't give you any legal recourse.
On the bright side, if you're only working 12 hours per week you should have plenty of time to get another job. |

You need to check your contact of employment carefully. Any changes that they intend to make should be consulted and agreed with you beforehand. Yes they can make changes and cut your shifts and hours, but they should give an explanation as to why they are doing so and give you a letter amending the original contract.
Make sure that no one else is employed in your place to work those shifts and that any temporary staff have been released, although i can't for the life of me see how a nursing home has been affected by the credit crunch. Inform your employer that cutting your shifts forces you to seek additional employment to top up your income, nd ask them to at least keep your shift the same day of each week to accomodate you until things pick up. |

Yes they are legally allowed to cut your hours. You need to look for another job. You might be eligible for some unemployment benefits going from 36 hours to 12. |

Actually, they did have a responsibility the first time - you worked 36hours which is legally described as full time, and you can't be forced to move to part-time. However, 24 hours is not full time so cutting this to 12 hours is quite legal.
