Question for employers? Help!?

Hi I'm alex! Please I'm needing positive advice not ignorant comments. I just started working for a big company which name I can't use obviously. I work at the receiving area unloading trucks again for a big company. They pay you good but they treat you decent. I've been there for about 8 months, how can I advance from being an unloader to a better position. Each day I give a 120%! The good news is that I am being recognized because I already got two employee of the month in the short time I've been there so that you should give you an idea. Anyway I know I just started but how can I make sure to prove to them to promote me later on, because I don't want to get older and be doing hard labor you know, really hard. I'm honest, reliable, bi-lingual, upfront guy. What are my chances of getting promoted in my area. I'm always at work.
Should I tell my manager I want to advance, if so what words are best to use? I want a better life and future, that is no crime right?

It's great that your work has been recognized in the short time that you have been there. Here are a few things you can do:
-if the company has a tuition assistance program, use it and advance your education. Folks who work in offices, by and large, have more education than those who do "hard labor."
-talk to your boss and let him/her know that you really like the company and your job, and than you want to understand what the future career path could be for someone in your positions. What jobs in teh company might your current experience qualify you for, and how long will it take you to move ahead? If you work in a union environment, talk to your union rep as well - there may be strict rule which govern promotions or transfers.
-I agree with the other poster who advised you to look at the available openings in your company. Most firms have an internal job posting process and/or a website that lists open jobs. Check with your HR person if you aren't sure.
-Finally, keep doing good work and learning everything you can. Make friends in other departments who can let you know when jobs are coming available.
Good luck! |

Watch for job openings in the company that you may be qualified for and bid on any jobs that are a step up.
In the meantime, keep working hard and showing up for work everyday.
Employers see who the good workers are and which ones they can trust. If you are bilingual, that is always a plus, be sure you always volanteer to interpret.
Good luck. |

hey alex, I'd say keep up with what you are doing by working hard and being reliable.
Ask Questions! Not stupid ones no, but good and meaningful questions related to the business. Show interest in how things are done that are not specifically your job. I think its okay to approach your boss and ask him of the possibilities of promotion. Just ask him/her for a meeting and directly ask about your future with the company and if there is room for advancement in the future. |
