Question for lawyers.?

When a young lawyer joins a law firm do they really work 12-16 hour days 6 to 7 days a week like in John Grishams books or is that just fiction?

Yes very true due to intense competition and saturation of so many other lawyers out there coming out from school and unable to find work.

It's not like TV where a client comes in and they go to court tomorrow for trial. In some trials, the preparation, paperwork could be boxes full and they don't get that way with a full hours of work. In some cases, just to prepare for trial, they may have the client in for up to 30 or 40 hours to go over testimony and be ready. And in many trials, you are doing legal work prior to going to court and hours after to prepare for the next witness or expert.

My husband (retired after 40 years) had 1 client who wanted a contract reviewed for a house he was going to buy. He stated that he could read the contract and it took him 20 minutes, so he believed that he would be charged for around 20 minutes of legal time. But, as a lawyer, even if he can read it in 20 minutes, his job is to protect the client and prepare him for any subsequent implications that might arise if not informed, thus causing the client to lose money and subsequently files suit of malpractice on the lawyer for improper advice.

Lawyers have very stressful jobs and it is not as glamourous as they show on TV/movies.

In large law firms, yes it is very common.
