Recent college grad and convicted felon trying to start a career. . .advice?

I am 27 and since graduating from college about two years ago I have been unable to find a career due to a felony conviction. Approx. six months before I graduated I got into a bar fight and ended up with a 3rd degree assault charge. I don't have any history of violence other than this. I was honestly in the wrong place at the wrong time . I am waiting tables and make good money, but I went to college so I could get out of the restaurant industry. Any advice other than "be honest". . .that doesn't help!

You might be able to get that conviction expunged; definitely talk to a lawyer or this will follow you around forever. In the meantime, get a job like telemarketing where they don't check your references. If necessary, lie on your app; in the private sector they do not check, as a rule, and why not be working when you should be? Unfair. Go for it. Honesty is NOT always the best policy!
