Receptionist thinking of quitting?
Find answers to your legal question.

Receptionist thinking of quitting?

Im currently working as a receptionist for a organization that does foster care work. I've been here for about 4 months and HATE IT. I have a BS in psychology and just feel as if i should be doing more then just answering phones and making copies. Every morning i regret coming to my job and dont look forward to it at all. Now, i am getting married in 6 months and plan on quitting and moving. Should i find another job until then? or just be patient?

I did this with a job I hated and the 6 months off killed me. I get questioned regarding why I would just up and quit a job without having another one lined up. Even though I did it to be with my son for the 6 months before he started K5 people still think that I was uncommitted even though I was at that job for 4 years.
My advice would be to stick it out until a month or so before you leave, leave on good terms (a really long notice helps) and make sure you have all the contact info for all of your supervisors so that you know you will get at least one or two good references out of it.

Being in a bad work situation really can make life miserable. Considering you spend probably more than half of your waking life there, it can seriously hamper your lifestyle and make quitting very appealing.

That being said, it's important to understand the value of a good job reference. If you're planning on moving in 6 months anyway, my advice would be to stick it out and get the best reference you can from the job. It's sort of like turning lemons into lemonade. From my point of view, making the best of a bad situation here would be the best option mainly, because you know it's short term.

On the other side, if you do quit this job and find something new for 6 months, you will have 2 jobs that you stayed at for less than a year which can come across as being uncommitted to a prospective employer. I know you're not looking for a reception job long term, but a good reference speaks for your character and that's as important as having a reference from a related job. I feel like having one good reference for a 10-month span of time is better than having 2 ok references for a 6 and 4 month span of time.

That's just my opinion, you obviously have to do what you need to do, but I hope that helps. Good luck!

If you plan on moving soon anyway I don't think it's that big of a deal for you to quit. If you're really that miserable at work you should find something enjoyable to do for the next six months to avoid being stressed out as your wedding approaches. Good luck!

If you live in Australia, particularly Western Australia, MOVE ON!

There is such a skills shortage everyone is screaming for people. You'll find a better job in NO time.

Or you could temp for 6 months!

does your company promote from within? are there positions in this firm you would want to hold? starting at the bottom is the hardest way to get anywhere but in the end the most rewarding as progress depends entirely on your abilities. but there is nothing wrong with moving on if you are in a dead end situation. my advice? give it at least a year and during that time build a network of people who can help you to move on if you so desire, .
