Speaking as the author of the new job search book "Think Like an Interviewer: Your Job Hunting Guide to Success," there's no right or wrong answer here.
And the reason is because it's a matter of opinion. Some people in your situation would up and quit immediately. Others would stick around and take a wait and see approach.
Once you discovered the company's plan, to replace you with your subordinate, you knew your job was in jeapordy. So you were able to see the writing on the wall and know your job wasn't safe. Eventually, you'd be let go.
So the issue comes down to when you should leave? Do you leave right away as you ultimately decided? Leave as soon as you find something else before they terminate you? Or stay, wait for them to fire you, and then begin looking for something else.
Now a lot of it has to do with you own personal situation. Given the lousy economy, which I say is a depression rather than a recession. And 12 million unemployed and growing each day, the question becomes, "Can you afford to be unemployed right now?"
Let's face reality, job seekers are having a very tough time finding work! Many have been looking for years! Been forced to relocate, accept lower pay, and have less responsibilities. Nearly 1 million have given up job searching entirely because they feel it's hopeless!
So if I were counseling you, I would have suggested you not have resigned so quickly. Instead, I would have recommended that you stay and look for something else. This way, you'd be collecting your paycheck for as long as you're there, delaying unemployment in a very down market, and able to set some emergency money aside for your impending termination.
After all, who knows how long it would have been before they'd let you go. It could have been months later. And during that time, you'd be working and getting a paycheck.
Now I'm not saying you were wrong for leaving. The company definitely took advantage of you and did a very nasty thing. So I don't blame you for wanting to get out. The only thing I disagree with was your decision to leave right away.
And with the job market being what it is, I can understand why your family is not happy with your decision. Today, people are being taken advantage of more and more and more. But unless you can afford to be out of work for an extended period of time, I suggest putting up with the nonsense. The average person simply cannot afford to be unemployed right now! Yet would understand your anger and wanting to up and quit right then and there. The whole thing stinks! |

I would have waited for the company to fire me so I could collect unemployment compensation and/or file a civil suit against the company for wrongful termination. By voluntarily resigning, many of your rights are lost--or at least are hard to prove.
However, if you can say that you quit under duress you can still file for the civil suit and will likely win.
My wife and kids would not be happy either. What family would be happy when the economy is in such a state? |
