Resume help: how many years back should one go back in regards to employment history?

got it
go back and show all relevant history. If your say 20 years old, you don't have to post you walked dogs when you were 10. Stay with posting jobs that you received a w2 for and try and tie what you learned on those jobs to the job you are seeking.

I would NOT leave off information that you think might hurt you, ie if you have job hopped. Your history will be checked, if they find you lied, you will not be hired. Trust me, i have hired over 1000 people in my life - if i find you lied, you will not be working for me.

Unless the employment history you are citing is directly related to the new job you are seeking, don't go back any more that 5 years max. Anything further back can hurt you if it looks like you are just job hopping and not consistent in your employment. On the other hand, if you have been at one single job for many years with advancements and whatnot, then go ahead and include it.

Best way is to include all relevent and responsible positions you were in. Elaborate main characteristics of your each job especially the ones which are more close to the job you are applying for. Bottom line is you can go as many years back as you want but provide details of only those jobs which reflect your positive characteristics. Try to be consistant with time line also.

Look at it this way. Include in your resume:
1.) Your most recent job
2.) Your most recent full time job
3.) The job most relevant to the job you are applying for
4.) The job you held longest
5.) The job where it would be easiest to to get a glowing reference

Does that fill the page? If not, add in jobs to fill in all jobs you had for the last 5 years. If you still have space, expand to 10 years.

It's all a trade off involving available space.
