Undergrad>law school>pass BAR exam>call yourself an attorney

Or

Undergrad> law school>FAIL BAR>a paralegal??

You have to get a general law degree, and then you have to get your bar exam passed.

Not only do you have to bass the bar exam, but then you have to be admitted to the bar if you want to practice.

There are still plenty of options for someone with a J.D. Just look at all the politicians out there =P

You can always re-take the bar until you pass. So failing the bar doesn't mean that life is doomed to being a paralegal. Some firms will even hire law school graduates while they are awaiting bar results, but if you do not pass the bar on the first try, most will only allow you to retake it once. Otherwise you get the boot ...
