Salary reduction due to hard times?

I work as an engineer. my company is feeling the hard times. there have been layoffs and such. last week we were informally told that the rest of us left were getting 6% salary cuts. starting immediately. has this happened to anyone else? is there anything wrong with it?

My dad is a business manager making 6 figures and his whole company including himself took a 10% cut this year.
So all in all 6% and keeping your job isn't that horrible.
But you could always be looking online for another job if you think you should be earning more.

no it is legal , better to take a little less than nothing at all

I worked for a retail lumber company for about 19 years and there were times when sales were slow we were cut days to prevent laying off some of the part time help, this may last only one week and sometimes 2 or 3. I would ask if this was permanent. It may be to late ask but have you put anything away for a rainy day as it may begin to drizzle and rain later on.

It's legal, unless you have a contract or union that states you must be paid a set rate. If your unionized your union has to agree to the pay cut on your behalf. Typically it's better than being laid off. Some companies will reduce your hours to compensate also. Hopefully it will only be temperary. Personally I'd take the pay cut to keep my job.
