Should I be paid for job duties?

I am an instructional assistant at an after school program. My job description includes preparing daily lesson plans but I am not given time at work to do this. Instead, I research and write lesson plans on my own time, time I do not get paid for. I am paid hourly and clock in & out every day. I have been told that they school district is not required to give planning time to instructional assistants- so they don't. Can they still require us to do the lesson plans without getting paid for that time?

I realize many teachers do this- but it is legal to require us to develop and turn in lesson plans but not give us paid time to complete the task? I compared it to cleaning the classroom; this is something we are required to do and obviously we get paid for the time spent doing it.

This depends on the union contract with the district. Contact your union rep.

It's only illegal if it violates the contract between your union and the school district.

yes indeed you should get paid for any work you do so if you think you are getting chatted then speak up and let your feelings be heard ok thanks as a closed mouth never gets heard if it never speaks and a closed mouth never will be heard if it does say what needs to be said
