Should I file a discrimination complaint?

Here's what happen: I was getting interviewed by the hospital and during the interview one of the interviewers asked me if I had lived in my hometown all my life. I said yes, then she went on to say that I should know the other interviewer because she's from the same place I live. I asked the other interviewer what her last name was and once she told me I told her that I didn't know anyone by that last name. Then she asked me who I was related to and I told her my families last name (keep in mind that at the time I didn't know they weren't suppose to be asking me this type of stuff). After I told her my families last name she named off some of my family members and I told her that they were my cousins. Then she says "Bryan (not his real name) is getting out of prison isn't he?" I said that he was and to celebrate it the family is having a big barbecue at his brothers house. Then she went on to tell some inappropriate jokes about my mothers job (my mother's a retired Special Ed teacher). After that conversation was over all they asked was my strengths, weaknesses, and where I last worked. When answering about my weaknesses I told them that my weakness is really not a weakness at all but sometimes I can be so determined to get the job done to the point where I don't really converse a lot (I believe this was a good answer since I was being interviewed for a Scheduling Clerk position and customers wouldn't be involved). After hearing this the interviewer made a joke to the other interviewer saying "Oh don't you just hate people who do their work". She went on to say "In our group we talk a lot but if you want to sit over there and not say anything I guess that's fine". After the interview I had to ask them if I should fill out an application (since I didn't fill one out and just sent my resume through e-mail), then the interviewer showed me where I would be working if hired and then she walked me down to the front door. On the way to the front door she told me "We are looking for someone who can fit in with the group. If someone doesn't fit then we try to gang up and get them out of here. Not too long ago we had a girl who was always complaining about us not doing our work and talking to much and we can't be having that. I been here too long for someone new to be complaining about me. So we had to get her out of here. One day she called in on her lunch break and said she wasn't coming back". Then she went on to tell about how she's looking for someone to fit in the group by saying, "There was this guy who came up here and applied. There's nothing saying that we can't hire a guy, but I was like we're all girls, a guy is not going to fit in with us. So I made sure to tell the 'other interviewer' not to hire him". I don't know if they didn't hire me because of my family members, if they didn't hire me because I said my weakness was that I work hard and don't really converse at times, or if they didn't hire me because their a group of four older Caucasian females and they thought I wouldn't fit in. Either way it goes I didn't get the job and based on how the interview went and the information the interviewer gave me after the interview I feel that they discriminated against me, and have discriminated against others in the past. What can I do about this? What will happen to the interviewers? I know that they are not naive to the way a proper interview is suppose to go because one interviewer said she had been working there for seven years and the other said she had been working there for five. How do I go about filing a complaint and what will be the steps taken after the complaint is filed? Any information or guidance you may have will be appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you have virtually nothing to gain and a lot to lose by filing any kind of complaint on this set of facts. Obviously, it's not a place you would want to work in any event so you really didn't lose anything by not getting the job.

I would chalk it up to experience and try and put it behind you.

Also, it your word against the 2 of them. Not good odds. Pick your battles wisely.

Huh? Sounds to me like the opposite. They told you flat out that they would not hire a guy and that they don't want anyone who would not fit in. They would not have confided in you if they did not like you.

It sounds like they knew your family and had no problem with them.

There is nothing in your post to indicate that you were discriminated against. Someone better must have applied.

Nothing in your post indicates that you were discrimiated against.

Sounds like maybe you didn't get hired because of your sleazy relatives, not because of your race. That isn't discrimination.

That said, it is pretty stupid of them. The way your cousins act isn't your fault, and there's no reason to think that you will behave the way they do. Frankly, those interviewers sound like idiots, and you probably wouldn't really want to work with them anyway. From the sounds of them, they'd drive ME nuts - and I'm an older, Caucasion woman.

If you feel you were discriminated against, talk to your local EEOC office to get their take on the situation.

I say you're lucky not to have to work with this bunch of B'ches and move on. You can blame all sorts of things and try to sue but it's harder than it sounds. Do you have endless money for legal fees? Nope, didn't think so. Be glad you don't have to go to work and face those women.
